The HoD - Foundation Phase, is the member of the Senior Management Team who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the School, and the individual welfare and progress of learners and staff who form part of the Foundation Phase at the Primary School. He/she has a major role in policy development and decision making, initiating improvements and developments where appropriate in the curriculum or management systems, deputising for the Head of School when required and promoting the aims and ethos of the school as stated below.


The role includes the following key areas of responsibility, which includes all relevant policies (to be reviewed annually) and their efficient and effective outworking in practice (liaising with other staff as appropriate):

  • Foundation Phase Care, including leading and line-managing the Grade Heads (which includes monitoring learner behaviour, appearance and attendance at all school activities; as well as monitoring of Grade Heads and Grade Assemblies, etc.)
  • Interaction with, where appropriate, the counselling services and other forms of learner support
  • Managing all aspects of learner leadership and interaction with the heads of the various leadership portfolios
  • Working with the head of Global Citizenship & Civic Engagement to develop learners’ of their role in civil society and the world
  • Line-management of a group of middle managers and office staff, as required
  • Taking a lead on all safety issues and ensuring policies are annually updated and implemented appropriately
  • Performance management of staff along the reporting lines relevant to this position.
  • Encourage consultation and discussion amongst staff.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians
